8 Thoughts About the Last Debate #2
Schieffer's false equivalency about the negative campaigns was clearly designed to introduce Ayers and ACORN to the discussion and it certainly worked. In fact, Barack Obama introduced the name Bill Ayers to the debate to get it out in the open.
There's no point delving into the specifics of the McCain accusations here. You can find hundreds of articles about it! I simply wonder why the McCainites continue to believe that this is a good idea. Kos has it right when he says, "No one gives a crap about Ayers." As the CNN poll shows, 62% of the American people do not care much about Obama's connection to Ayers. I suppose when all you have left is slander, the Republicans have no choice but to go there. As Obama said last night, "I think the fact that this has become such an important part of your campaign, Sen. McCain, says more about your campaign than it says about me."
McCain's mention of ACORN as "maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy" is not simple hyperbole, it is just irrational and insane. John McCain is not a stupid man and there is no doubt that he understands the difference between voter registration fraud and voter fraud, but there is nothing that will stop him from exploiting ACORN and the good work they do. I'll have a series on ACORN in a few days and explain why I admire this organization, but let's look back to a time a few years ago when John McCain did as well. ACORN is just another victim of voter registration fraud.
